April Bey (born 1987) is a Bahamian American artist and teacher. She is known for her art that mixes different materials. Her work often shares important ideas about Black women today.
About April Bey
April Bey grew up in the Bahamas on New Providence island. She studied art in college. She earned a degree in drawing in 2009 from Ball State University. Later, she got a master's degree in painting in 2014 from California State University, Northridge.
Her Art Style
April Bey creates art using many different materials. She mixes things like caulking, resin, wood, and fabric. Her art often features Black women. She shows their passion, strength, power, and beauty. Her work explores how strong women are. It also looks at unfair expectations society has for women.
Bey uses photos of famous Black women in her art. These include people like Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Solange, Issa Rae, and Michaela Coel. She adds text over these images. This text shares stories that Black women are telling about themselves today.
Where She Teaches
April Bey is also a professor. She teaches art at Glendale Community College.
Museum Exhibitions
April Bey had her first solo museum show in 2021. It was called Atlantica, The Gilda Region. The show opened in Los Angeles at the California African American Museum. It was an art experience that surrounded visitors. The exhibition explored ideas like Afrofuturism, feminism, and internet culture in Black America.
