April Bey, born in 1987, is an artist and teacher from the Bahamas and America. She is famous for her art that uses different materials to talk about ideas and stories related to Black women today.
Early Life and Education
April Bey grew up in the Bahamas, on an island called New Providence. She studied art in college. She earned a degree in drawing from Ball State University in 2009. Later, in 2014, she got another degree in painting from California State University, Northridge.
Art Career
April Bey creates art using many different materials. She uses things like caulking, resin, wood, and fabric in her collage work. Her art often focuses on Black women. She shows their passion, strength, and power. Her work explores how strong women are and how society sometimes has unfair expectations for them.
Bey uses photos of famous Black women in her art. These include people like Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Solange, Issa Rae, and Michaela Coel. She adds text over these images. This text talks about the stories Black women are telling about themselves today.
Her art has been shown in many places. These include Band of Vices Gallery, Coagula Curatorial, Liquid Courage Gallery, and Barnsdall Art Park's Municipal Art Gallery.
Teaching and Exhibitions
April Bey is also a professor. She teaches art at Glendale Community College.
Her first big solo art show at a museum was called Atlantica, The Gilda Region. It opened on May 26, 2021, in Los Angeles. This show was at the California African American Museum. It was an immersive experience. It explored ideas about the future, feminism, and internet culture in Black America.
