Aqjangajuk Shaa (born March 17, 1937 – died 2019) was a very important Inuit artist. He was born in a place called Shartoweetuk camp, which is close to Cape Dorset in Nunavut, Canada. He is famous for his amazing sculptures made from stone.

What Aqjangajuk Shaa Was Known For

Aqjangajuk Shaa was best known for his beautiful stone carvings. These are sculptures made by shaping stone. One of his most famous works is a large inuksuk made from pink granite. An inuksuk is a special stone landmark built by Inuit people, often looking like a human figure. This particular inuksuk can be seen at the Scott Polar Research Institute.

His Unique Artworks

Besides his many stone carvings, Aqjangajuk Shaa also created one print. This print was called Wounded Caribou and he made it in 1967. A print is a type of artwork made by transferring an image from one surface to another. His brother, Kavavaow Mannomee, who was born in 1958, is also a talented artist.

Recognition and Achievements

Aqjangajuk Shaa received a special honor in 2003. He was chosen to be a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. This is a group that recognizes and celebrates the best artists in Canada. Being elected to this Academy shows how important and respected his artwork was.
