The Magnolia Hotel is a cool old building in downtown Omaha, Nebraska. It used to be known as the Aquila Court Building and before that, the Sheraton Omaha. This historic building was constructed in 1923 at 1615 Howard Street. Because it's so special, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
The Aquila Court Building's Story
Design and Original Look
The Aquila Court Building was designed by an architecture company called Holabird and Roach. They created it for two businessmen, Chester and Raymond Cook, from Chicago. The building has a "U" shape. Its design was inspired by the Bargello, a famous building in Italy. You can even see the faces of George and Aquila Cook carved into the front of the building!
From the very beginning, this building was used for many different things. It had shops and offices, plus small apartments. The middle of the "U" shape had a beautiful outdoor area. This courtyard was like an Italian formal garden. It had stone paths, small pools with goldfish, tiny canals, and lots of plants.
Changes Over Time
Over the years, the building has been updated several times. In 1972, the lovely gardens in the courtyard were removed. They were covered with shiny marble and new fountains were added.
Later, in 1996, the building got another big makeover. This was done by the Sheraton company. Then, in 2006, the Magnolia Hotels chain renovated it again. This is when it became the Magnolia Hotel we know today.
