Arabesque (group) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Arabesque was a popular disco girl group. They formed in 1977 in Frankfurt, West Germany. The first members were Karen Ann Tepperis, Mary Ann Nagel, and Michaela Rose. Their first song, "Hello Mr. Monkey," became a big hit. It was very popular in Asia, especially in Japan and Korea.

The Group's Journey

Early Days and Member Changes

Soon after "Hello Mr. Monkey" was released, Mary Ann Nagel left the group. Heike Rimbeau joined Arabesque to take her place. In 1978, the group released their successful album called Friday Night.

Later in 1978, Karen Ann Tepperis left the group. She was replaced by Jasmin Vetter, who used to be a gymnast. In 1979, Heike Rimbeau also left the group. A country singer named Elke Brückheimer filled in for a few months. Finally, in June 1979, Sandra Ann Lauer joined the group. From then on, the main members were Michaela Rose, Jasmin Vetter, and Sandra Ann Lauer. This trio stayed together until the group split up.

Popular Albums and Changing Music

The first album Arabesque released with Sandra was City Cats. In 1980, they released their most successful album, Marigot Bay. This album was popular not only in Asia but also in their home country, Germany. That same year, they released another album called Midnight Dancer.

In 1981, they released the song "In For A Penny, In For A Pound." Their album Caballero came out in 1982. Arabesque's last three albums had different music styles than just disco. These albums were Why No Reply, Dance Dance Dance, and Time To Say Goodbye. They were not as successful as their earlier albums. However, two songs from their last album, "Ecstasy" and "Time to Say Goodbye," became very popular in the 1980s.

The Group Splits Up

Arabesque broke up in 1984. This happened because Sandra Ann Lauer wanted to start a solo singing career. After Arabesque, Jasmin Vetter and Michaela Rose formed their own group called "Rouge." That group lasted until 1988.
