Ararat (also written as ArArAt) is a well-known brand of Armenian brandy. It has been made by the Yerevan Brandy Company since 1887. This special drink is created using white grapes and fresh spring water. It follows a very old, traditional recipe.
Ararat brandies are aged for different amounts of time. The "ordinary brandies" are aged for 3 to 6 years. The "aged brandies" are much older, staying in special barrels for 10 to 30 years. This aging process gives them their unique taste and color.
Ararat brandy is mostly sold in countries that used to be part of the Soviet Union. These include Russia, Georgia, Ukraine, and Belarus. In these countries, Armenian brandy is often called "cognac." In 1900, Ararat won a big award in Paris. This award allowed them to use the name "cognac" for a while.
Different Types of Ararat
Ararat makes many different kinds of brandy. Each type is aged for a specific number of years. This gives each one its own special qualities.
- Ararat Erebuni: This is a very old collection, aged for 30, 50, or even 70 years.
- Ararat Nairi: This type is aged for 20 years.
- Ararat: These are the younger brandies, aged for 3 or 5 years.
- Ararat Akhtamar: This one is aged for 10 years.
- Ararat Otborny: This type is aged for 7 years.
- Ararat Ani: This one is also aged for 7 years.
- Ararat Dvin: This is an older type, aged for 25 years.
- Ararat Armenia: This is a special collection.
- Ararat Vaspurakan: This type is aged for 15 years.
Some types of Ararat brandy are no longer made. These are called "retired brands." They are part of the brand's history.
- Ararat Tonakan: This was aged for 15 years.
- Ararat Kilikia: This was a very old type, aged for 30 years.
- Ararat Sparapet: This was aged for 40 years.
- Ararat Noah's Ark: This was one of the oldest, aged for 70 years.
