What is an Arcade Building?
An arcade is a type of building that has a long, covered walkway. This walkway is usually lined with shops or businesses. It's a bit like an indoor street. People can walk through the arcade to shop or just enjoy the space.
Building History and Design
The Arcade Building was built in 1912. The Equitable Real Estate Company constructed it. Back then, it cost about 200,000 dollars. That was a lot of money for a building at that time!
The building has two main sides, called façades. These façades face Main Street and Washington Street. They are shaped like the letter "L". Both sides are made of a special material called terra cotta. Terra cotta is a type of baked clay. It's often used for decoration on buildings.
The Arcade Building has two floors above ground. It also has a basement level. Both the first and second floors have five sections, or "bays," which are like large window or door openings.
