The Archaeological and Ethnological Museum of Córdoba (also known as Museo Arqueológico y Etnológico de Córdoba in Spanish, or just MAECO) is a cool museum in Córdoba, Spain. It's owned by the Spanish government. The museum's daily operations are managed by the Ministry of Culture of the Junta of Andalusia, which is the local government of the region.

History of the Museum

The idea for a museum like this started way back in 1866. Then, in 1867, a special rule was made to create provincial museums, which led to this one. At first, the Archaeological Museum shared its space with the Museum of Fine Arts. But as more and more ancient items were found, they needed their own bigger home!

After moving a few times, the Spanish government bought a beautiful old building in 1942. This building was a Renaissance palace called the Palace of Páez de Castillejo. It took many years, from 1945 to 1959, to get the palace ready to show off all the amazing artifacts.

In 1984, the museum's management was officially handed over from the Spanish government to the local government of Andalusia. In 1994, it got its current name, Museo Arqueológico y Etnológico de Córdoba. A brand new building was added in 2011, giving the museum even more space. What's really neat is that the museum even has its own archeological site. You can see the remains of the city's ancient Roman theatre right there!

What You Can See: The Collections

The museum's collection is huge and covers a very long time in history. It's usually split into three main groups:

  • Prehistory and Protohistory: This part shows items from the very earliest times, before written history. It includes tools, pottery, and art from ancient people who lived in the area.
  • Rome and the Visigothic Culture: Here, you'll find amazing things from when the Romans ruled Spain. You'll also see artifacts from the Visigoths, who came after the Romans.
  • Islam and Mudéjar Art: This section displays beautiful art and objects from the time when Islamic cultures were strong in Spain. Mudéjar art is a special style that mixes Islamic and Christian designs.
