Archaic Period facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Archaic Period is a name archaeologists give to early times in history. It's when people started making big changes in how they lived. This usually means they began to settle down in one place, grow their own food (agriculture), and form larger groups or societies.

This term is used for different parts of the world and different times:

What is the Archaic Period?

The Archaic Period marks a really important time in human history. Before this, people often moved around a lot, hunting and gathering food. But during the Archaic, they learned new skills. They started building permanent homes and villages. They also discovered how to farm, which meant they didn't have to move to find food anymore. This led to bigger communities and the beginnings of complex societies.

Archaic Times in the Americas

In the Americas, the Archaic stage came after the time when people first arrived (called the Lithic period) and before they started forming very complex societies (the Formative period). The exact dates for this period can be different depending on the area.
