Archibald Campbell of Lochawe facts for kids
Sir Archibald Campbell of Lochawe (who died before 1394) was also known as Gillespic Campbell or Gillespig More. He was an important early member of Clan Campbell. He was also a direct male ancestor of the Earls of Argyll. This means the Earls of Argyll are his descendants through his sons, grandsons, and so on.
Archibald's Life and Role
Archibald was the son of Sir Colin Og Campbell of Lochawe. His mother was Helena, who might have been the daughter of John de Menteith. Archibald became the Lord of Lochawe. He either inherited this title from his father or took it over from his brother, Dougall.
In 1342, King David II gave Archibald lands that his brother Dougall had lost. He also received the area called Melfort. Archibald then gave Melfort to his half-brother, Neil. The Campbells of Kenmore and Melfort are Neil's descendants.
In the 1350s, Archibald received many properties in Argyll. These were given to him by John, Lord of Menteith, and John's cousin, Mary de Menteith. One of the most important places he received was Castle Sween. In 1373, he also got the lands of Finnart and Stronewhillen from Paul Glenn.
In 1382, Archibald and his son, Colin, received an important job from the King. They became the King's Lieutenants and Special Commissioners in the Sheriffdom of Argyll. This was a job that stayed in their family. It meant they helped the King manage the area and earned money for their work.
His Family
An old family record called Ane Accompt of the Genealogie of the Campbells says that Archibald married Mary or Isabella. She was the daughter of John Lamont. Other records also call her Mary.
Archibald and Isabella had these children:
- Sir Colin 'Iongantach' Campbell of Lochawe: He was the father of Duncan (the 1st Lord Campbell). The Earls of Argyll are descendants of Colin.
- Helena Campbell
- Duncan 'Skeodanasach' (or Skeodnish) Campbell
Helena first married John MacDonald, who was the son of John of Islay. They had a son named Angus. Helena then married Donnchadh, Earl of Lennox and had more children.
Duncan was called 'Skeodanasach' because he grew up with Clan Malcolm in Ardscotnish. The MacConnochie Campbells of Inverawe are said to be his descendants.
