Archibald Douglas, Earl of Moray (born 1426 – died May 1, 1455) was an important Scottish nobleman. He lived during the time of King James II of Scotland. Archibald was one of five brothers from the powerful Black Douglas family. This family often had disagreements with the king.
Life of Archibald Douglas
Archibald Douglas was the son of James Douglas. His mother was Lady Beatrice Sinclair.
Archibald was a twin brother to James Douglas, 9th Earl of Douglas. James later became the 9th Earl of Douglas. People believed James was older by just a few minutes. This meant James inherited the Douglas earldom when their older brother passed away. However, some thought Archibald might have been considered the older twin earlier in their lives.
Archibald became the Earl of Moray because he married Elizabeth Dunbar. She was the 8th Countess of Moray. He was known as the Earl of Moray in 1445. This was when he was a witness at the Scottish Parliament. He witnessed the creation of James Hamilton, 1st Lord Hamilton, as a Lord of Parliament.
Archibald was killed while fighting against the king's supporters. This happened at the Battle of Arkinholm. After the battle, his head was taken to the King at Abercorn Castle.
