Sir Archibald Douglas was the only son of Sir William Douglas of Glenbervie and Elizabeth Auchinleck. He was born at Glenbervie, a place in Scotland, sometime before his father passed away. His father, Sir William, died during a famous battle called the Battle of Flodden. This battle was a major event in Scottish history.

Sir Archibald Douglas was married three times during his life.

  • His first wife was Agnes Keith. She was the daughter of William Keith, who held the title of the 3rd Earl Marischal. An Earl Marischal was a very important officer in Scotland, responsible for protecting the king's regalia (like crowns and scepters) and keeping order at royal events. Agnes passed away between 1542 and 1548.
  • With Agnes, Sir Archibald had a son named William Douglas, 9th Earl of Angus.
  • His second wife was Elizabeth Irvine, the daughter of Sir Alexander Irvine of Drum.
  • Sir Archibald and Elizabeth had two more sons and six daughters together. One of their daughters, Katherine or Sara Douglas, married Sir John Carmichael.
  • His third wife was Margaret Carmichael. She was the sister of Elizabeth Carmichael.
