What is Fort Hunter Mansion?
Fort Hunter Mansion is a special house with a long history. It started as a small stone "cabin" built in 1787. Later, in 1814, a much larger stone house was added to it. This addition was built in the Federal style, which was popular at that time.
How the Mansion Grew
The house has a "T" shape when you look at it from above. The bigger, newer part from 1814 is at the front. The original 1787 cabin is behind it. There's also a wooden summer kitchen attached to the back. This kitchen was added later in the 1800s.
Special Features of the House
The front of the mansion has a grand entrance called a portico. It has columns that are in the Tuscan order style. Above the columns, on the second floor, there is a special window called a Palladian window. The main front door is also very fancy. It has a semi-circular window above it, called a fanlight, and thin windows on the sides.
Fort Hunter Today
Today, Fort Hunter Mansion is open to the public. It works as a 19th-century historic house museum. This means you can go inside and see what life was like many years ago. The house is part of a 40-acre park. Visitors can explore the grounds and enjoy the scenery by the river.
A Recognized Historic Place
Because of its importance, the Archibald McAllister House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. This is a list of places in the United States that are important to history. The mansion is also part of the larger Fort Hunter Historic District.
