Fort Hunter Mansion: A Historic Home
What is Fort Hunter Mansion?
Fort Hunter Mansion is a special place where history comes alive. The oldest part of the house is a two-story stone "cabin" built in 1787. In 1814, a much larger stone house was added to it. This addition made the mansion much bigger. It gave the house a unique "T" shape. The 1814 part is at the front. The older cabin and a summer kitchen are at the back.
A Look Inside: Architecture and Design
The main part of the mansion was built in 1814. It shows off the beautiful Federal style. This style was popular in the United States after the American Revolution.
Special Features
The front of the mansion has a special porch called a portico. It has columns in the Tuscan order style. Above the portico, on the second floor, is a large window. This window is called a Palladian window. It has a tall arch in the middle and two smaller windows on the sides. The main entrance door is also very fancy. It has a semi-circular window above it, called a fanlight. There are also tall, narrow windows on each side of the door, called sidelights. These windows have thin wooden ribs.
