Archibald W. Piccott (born August 21, 1869 – died March 16, 1926) was an important politician in Newfoundland. He served in the Newfoundland House of Assembly, which was like their parliament. He represented the area of Harbour Grace. He was a member of the People's Party from 1908 to 1919. Later, he was a Liberal from 1923 to 1924.

Early Life and Work

Archibald Piccott was born in Cupids on August 21, 1869. His parents were William Piccott and Mary Webber. He went to school in Cupids and Bay Roberts.

Young Archibald left school early to work at sea. However, he had an accident and lost a hand. After this, he decided to change his path. He studied business and then worked for a company that sold dry goods. He also worked for a company that ran a sawmill.

Later, Piccott moved to Nova Scotia and went back to sea for a while. Around 1896, he returned to Newfoundland. He worked on a ship that traveled between Brigus and Halifax. He also ran his own shop in Bay Roberts. In 1917, he became a local manager for the Gordon-Pew Fisheries Company. This company was involved in fishing.

A Public Servant

Archibald Piccott became a politician. He was elected to the Newfoundland House of Assembly. This was the main law-making body in Newfoundland at the time. He represented the area of Harbour Grace.

He served in the government as the Minister of Marine and Fisheries. This role meant he helped manage things related to the ocean and fishing. During World War I, he was part of the Home Defence Committee. This group helped protect Newfoundland during the war.

Piccott tried to get re-elected in 1919 but was not successful. In 1921, he became a secretary for the Minister of Shipping. This job involved helping with sea transport. In 1923, he was named Minister of Public Works. This meant he was in charge of public buildings and projects. He did not run for election again in 1924.

Archibald Piccott passed away at his home in Bay Roberts. He was 56 years old and had been ill for some time.
