Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts (often called "The Bray") is a special place in Helena, Montana, USA. It's a public, nonprofit organization that teaches people about art, especially art made from clay.

What is The Bray?

The Archie Bray Foundation was started in 1951. It was built on the land where the Western Clay Manufacturing Company used to make bricks. A kind man named Archie Bray, who loved art, created it. He wanted it to be a wonderful place for anyone truly interested in making art with clay.

Archie Bray passed away in 1953. But his foundation kept going, even after the brick factory closed in 1960. In 1984, The Bray bought the old brickyard buildings and kilns. Today, the Archie Bray Foundation is famous around the world. The old brick factory building is even listed as a historic place in America.

How Did The Bray Start?

Archie Bray was a brickmaker, but he also loved helping artists. He dreamed of a place where artists could learn and create with clay. He wanted to make sure artists had the best tools and space to work.

Who Were the First Artists?

The heart of The Bray is its artist residency program. This program lets artists live and work there for a time. The very first artists to join in 1951 were Rudy Autio and Peter Voulkos. Their professor, Frances Senska, was friends with Archie Bray. She encouraged them to use his new clay studio.

To earn money, Rudy and Peter worked in the brick factory during the day. Then, in the evenings, they made their own pottery. They even helped build the first building for the new artist program in the summer of 1951.
