Scientific classification

The Sumatran hog badger (Arctonyx hoevenii) is a special animal found only on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. It belongs to the weasel family, which includes animals like otters and ferrets. This badger is known for its unique snout, which looks a bit like a pig's nose.

What is the Sumatran Hog Badger?

The Sumatran hog badger is the smallest type of hog badger. It grows to be about the size of a large housecat. These badgers have fur that is not very thick, which helps them stay cool in the warm forests where they live. Their fur is also quite dark, helping them blend in with the jungle shadows.

A Snout for Digging

One of the most interesting features of the Sumatran hog badger is its "hog"-like snout. This is how it got its common name! Its nose is perfect for sniffing out food in the ground.

Strong Claws for Foraging

These badgers also have long, sharp claws. Their claws curve downwards, much like those of a sun bear. These strong claws are great for digging and finding food. They help the badger search for insects and other tasty treats hidden in the soil.

Where Do Sumatran Hog Badgers Live?

The Sumatran hog badger lives only in the high mountains of Sumatra. You can find them in the Barisan Mountains, which run along the island. They live in places from about 700 meters (about 2,300 feet) up to the very highest peaks.

Their Mountain Home

Their favorite places to live are mountain forests and cloud forests. These are forests that are often covered in mist and clouds. They also live in tropical subalpine meadows. These areas are usually between 200 and 2,600 meters (about 650 to 8,500 feet) above sea level. Even though they only live in certain parts of Sumatra, they are quite common in these areas.

How Scientists Study Them

For a long time, scientists thought the Sumatran hog badger was just a type of the greater hog badger. The greater hog badger was thought to be the only species in its group.

A New Discovery

However, in 2008, a new study suggested that the Sumatran hog badger was actually its own unique species. This means it's different enough from other hog badgers to be considered a separate kind of animal. The American Society of Mammalogists, a group of scientists who study mammals, later agreed with this finding. This shows how scientists are always learning new things about the natural world!
