Ardgowan, Prince Edward Island facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Ardgowan is a special place in Parkdale, which is now part of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. It's known as a National Historic Site of Canada because of its important role in Canadian history.

What is Ardgowan?

Ardgowan is more than just a house; it's a historic estate. It was once the country home of William Henry Pope. He was one of the important people called the Fathers of Confederation. These were the leaders who helped create Canada as a country.

A Home for a Father of Confederation

William Henry Pope was a strong supporter of Canada becoming a united country. This was a big deal because many people on Prince Edward Island weren't sure about joining at first. Pope used his home, Ardgowan, to help make it happen.

The Charlottetown Conference Connection

In 1864, a very important meeting happened in Charlottetown called the Charlottetown Conference. Leaders from different parts of British North America came together to talk about forming a new country. William Henry Pope invited many of these important people to Ardgowan. In this relaxed setting, away from formal meetings, they could talk freely and get to know each other better. This helped them understand each other's ideas and work towards a shared vision for Canada.

Becoming a National Historic Site

Ardgowan was recognized as a National Historic Site in 1966. The next year, in 1967, which was 100 years after Canada was formed, the Canadian government bought the house and some of its land. They did this to remember all the Fathers of Confederation. They also wanted to keep Ardgowan as a great example of a beautiful country home from the time of Confederation.

Visiting Ardgowan Today

Today, Ardgowan looks much like it did in the 1860s. The gardens and outdoor areas are open for everyone to visit and explore. The building itself is used by Parks Canada staff. It's the main office for all the national park sites in Prince Edward Island.
