Ardpatrick House

Ardpatrick House is a large country house in Ardpatrick, Scotland. It was built in the 1700s. This house is considered a very important old building in Scotland. It is protected because of its history and special architecture.

History of Ardpatrick House

Before the current Ardpatrick House was built, there was an old fort or castle on the same spot. We don't know exactly when this older building was constructed.

Ardpatrick became an important place in 1493. This was when the Clan MacAlister family group became separate from the larger Clan MacDonald. The leader of Clan MacAlister, a man named Iain Dubh (which means Black John), made Ardpatrick the main home for his family.

The house you see today was built in 1769. It was made for Angus MacAlester, who was the 11th leader of the Loup branch of the family. The builders were John Menelaws and Thomas Menelaws, who came from Greenock.

The Ardpatrick estate, which included a small cottage called Auchachoan, was sold in 1796. Alexander MacAllister of Loup sold it to Walter Campbell of Skipness. Mr. Campbell bought it for his son, Colin Campbell. Ardpatrick House was then the main home for the Campbell family of Ardpatrick until 1920.

After the Campbells, the Stewart family owned the house and land until 1947. The entire estate is very large, covering about 1,000 acres (which is about 4 square kilometers). It was put up for sale again in 2004.
