Ardross Castle was an old castle built around the 1300s. It was located in a place called Elie and Earlsferry in Fife, Scotland, very close to the sea. Today, only its ruins remain, telling a story of its long past.

The Castle's Story

Ardross Castle was first built by the Dishington family. They owned it for many years.

Changing Hands

In the year 1607, the Dishington family sold the castle. It was bought by Sir William Scott of Elie.

Later, towards the end of the 1600s, the castle changed owners again. It then belonged to Sir William Anstruther.

What's Left of the Castle?

Today, Ardross Castle is mostly in ruins. This means that much of the original building has fallen down over time.

Visible Remains

Even though it's a ruin, you can still see some parts of the castle. The most noticeable part is the vaulted basement. A vaulted basement means it had a special ceiling made of arches, which helped support the floors above.

You can also see the remains of another building block that was added later. These ruins give us clues about what the castle might have looked like a long time ago.
