The Argentine Chamber of Phonograms and Videograms Producers, also known as CAPIF (which stands for Cámara Argentina de Productores de Fonogramas y Videogramas in Spanish), is an important group in Argentina. It is part of the IFPI, a worldwide organization for the music industry. CAPIF helps protect the interests of music companies in Argentina. It is a nonprofit organization, meaning it does not aim to make money for itself. Instead, it works for the benefit of its members, which include both large international and smaller independent record labels.

How Music Sales Are Certified

CAPIF started its special program to certify music sales with Gold and Platinum awards in 1980. These awards show how many copies of an album or song have been sold. At first, an album needed to sell 30,000 copies to be Gold and 60,000 to be Platinum.

However, the way people bought music changed over time. Because fewer physical CDs were being sold, CAPIF updated its rules. In 2001, they lowered the number of sales needed for these awards. They changed the rules again in 2016. This time, they also added new awards for music sets (like a CD and DVD together) and for songs or albums listened to through streaming services.

CAPIF Music Charts

The CAPIF Charts used to be the main music sales charts in Argentina. These charts showed which singles and albums were selling the most each month. They included data from both physical sales (like CDs) and digital sales from stores across Argentina.

CAPIF stopped publishing these charts in 2018. Now, a weekly top 10 albums chart is published by Diario de Cultura. For singles, the main chart in Argentina is the Argentina Hot 100, which is published by Billboard.

Some of the charts CAPIF used to publish included:

  • CAPIF Top 10 Albums (physical sales)
  • CAPIF Top 10 Singles (digital sales)
  • CAPIF Top 10 Albums (music stores sales)
  • CAPIF Year-End Top 10 Albums (physical sales)
