Becoming a Mathematician

Ariane Mézard studied at the École normale supérieure de Lyon. She was there from 1992 to 1996. After that, she earned her Ph.D. in 1998. A Ph.D. is the highest university degree you can get. She studied at Joseph Fourier University with her advisor, Roland Gillard. Later, in 2005, she received her habilitation. This special qualification allowed her to teach as a full professor at universities. She earned it while at Paris-Sud University.

Her Career Journey

After getting her Ph.D., Ariane Mézard worked as a researcher. She was a postdoc at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in 1999. Then, in 2000, she worked at Regensburg University. From 2000 to 2006, she was an assistant professor at Paris-Sud University. She also taught at the École normale supérieure for a year.

From 2006 to 2012, she was a professor at Versailles Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines University. Since 2012, she has been a full professor of mathematics at Sorbonne University. She also teaches part-time at the École normale supérieure since 2016.

Awards and Special Groups

Ariane Mézard has received important recognition for her work. From 2010 to 2015, she was a junior member of the Institut Universitaire de France (IUF). The IUF is a special group for top university researchers in France. When she joined, she was one of only two women mathematicians in the group of fifty.
