Armadale Castle facts for kids
Armadale Castle is a historic country house in ruins, located on the Isle of Skye in Scotland. It used to be the home of the famous Clan Donald (MacDonald family). Today, its beautiful gardens are still looked after. They are now home to the Clan Donald Centre and the Museum of the Isles.

History of Armadale Castle
Armadale Castle has a long and interesting past. The first large house was built here around 1790. It faced southeast, looking out over the water called the Sound of Sleat.
Building a Mock-Castle
In 1815, a new part was added next to the original house. This new section was designed by an architect from Edinburgh named James Gillespie Graham. It was built to look like a castle, in a style called Tudor-Gothic. But it wasn't a real castle for defence. It was more for show, like a grand country home.
Changes After a Fire
After 1855, a fire damaged part of the house. A new central section was built to replace the damaged part. This new design was created by another architect, David Bryce.
The Castle Becomes a Ruin
The MacDonald family stopped living at Armadale Castle in 1925. After they left, the castle slowly became a ruin. In 1971, some of the older sections, especially those designed by Gillespie Graham, were taken down. What remains today is mostly the roofless part designed by David Bryce. Even though it's a ruin, the castle's gardens are still very special. They are protected as a "Designed Landscape."
Armadale Castle Today
Today, the gardens around the castle are beautifully kept. They are a popular place for visitors. The site is now home to the Clan Donald Centre. This centre helps people learn about the history of the MacDonald clan.
The Museum of the Isles
Inside the Clan Donald Centre, you can visit the Museum of the Isles. This museum tells the story of the MacDonalds and the history of the Isle of Skye. It's a great place to discover more about Scottish heritage.
