Early Life and Education
Armando Calderón Sol was born in San Salvador, El Salvador, in 1949. He went to a special school called Colegio Externado San José and finished in 1966. Later, in 1977, he earned a degree in law and social sciences from the Universidad Nacional de El Salvador. He worked as a lawyer and a businessman. He was also one of the people who helped start the Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA) party in September 1981.
Political Career
Mayor of San Salvador
Before becoming president, Armando Calderón Sol was the Mayor of San Salvador from 1988 to 1994. During his time as mayor, he built the Monument to "Hermano Lejano" (which means "Brother Far Away") at the end of the Comalapa Highway. This monument honors Salvadorans who live outside the country. He also put up bust monuments (statues of people's heads and shoulders) along the Proceres Boulevard. He encouraged people to be active and started a bike path in the San Jacinto area.
President of El Salvador
In 1994, Armando Calderón Sol ran for president. He won the election in a second round of voting against Dr. Ruben Zamora, who was a candidate from a different political group.
Many people say that President Calderón Sol helped bring things back to normal after the Salvadoran Civil War, which ended in 1992. He supported selling government-owned telephone companies and retirement savings plans to private companies. This was done to help the economy grow and make the country's systems, like communication, more modern.
He also worked to make El Salvador better for the "maquila" industry. These are factories that assemble products for export. He removed rules that made it harder for goods to be bought and sold across borders. This included taking away special rules that protected local farmers. However, this also made it harder for small farmers, causing many people to move to big cities or even other countries, like the U.S., to find work. This also created a cheaper labor supply for the factories.
President Calderón Sol is also known for helping former guerrilla fighters (people who fought in the war) return to normal civilian life. He started the process of selling the government's telecommunications company, ANTEL, and the electricity company, CAESS. He also began selling public hospitals and retirement savings plans to private companies. He continued the economic plans of the previous president, Alfredo Cristiani, which focused on making the economy more open.
Death
Armando Calderón Sol passed away on October 9, 2017. He was 69 years old and died from lung cancer in a hospital in Houston, Texas.
