The Armory–Latisona Building is a historic and interesting building in Lima, Ohio. It is also called the "Mihlbaugh Building." This old armory, which is a place where military weapons are stored, was built in 1896. It has a special look, combining Victorian styles with Romanesque Revival designs.
Building the Armory–Latisona
In 1885, something big happened near Lima: people found petroleum, which is oil. This discovery made the city grow very fast. Many new businesses and buildings were quickly built along South Main Street.
In the Kibby Corners area, lots of new homes were also built. These were mostly wooden frame houses. They were made for all the workers who came to Lima for the growing industries.
Saving History in Lima
Today, some parts of South Main Street and the Kibby Corners area are not as well-kept. Many old, empty buildings have been torn down by the city. Public spaces like parks and streets also look less attractive because they are not maintained as much.
However, the Armory–Latisona Building is different. It stands out as an important historic place. The building next to it, the Lima Cleaning and Pressing Company Building, is also very important. Both of these buildings are seen as key parts of the area's history.
In 1982, the Armory–Latisona Building and the Lima Cleaning and Pressing Company Building were added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a special list of places in the United States that are important to history. These two buildings were among seventeen in Lima added to the list. The Armory–Latisona Building was chosen because its original design and look were still very well preserved.
