What is the Armudu Tea Glass?
In Azerbaijan, serving tea is a very important part of their culture. When guests arrive, tea is usually the first thing offered. The name Armudu means "in the shape of a pear". The name Boğmalı means "narrow". Both names describe the glass's unique shape. Some people even say its shape reminds them of a hostess in Azerbaijani culture.
Materials and Special Features
Armudu glasses can be made from different materials. These include glass, porcelain, faience (a type of pottery), and even silver. Besides looking nice, the Armudu glass has a clever design. It helps keep your tea hot!
The middle part of the glass is narrower. This design helps to keep the hot tea at the bottom from cooling down too quickly. It makes sure the warm tea stays warm until you finish drinking it.
How to Serve Tea in Armudu
Armudu tea glasses often weigh about 100 grams. When tea is poured, it does not fill the glass all the way to the top. A small space of about 1 to 2 centimeters is left. This space is called "dodaq yeri" in Azerbaijani. It means "place for lips". This gap makes it easier and more comfortable to drink the hot tea.
Why is the Armudu Glass Shaped Like That?
The unique shape of the Armudu glass is important for several reasons.
Easy to Hold
First, this type of glass is easy to hold. The top edge is wider than the middle. This design stops the glass from slipping out of your hands.
Protects Your Hands
Second, the top part of the glass stays less hot. This helps to prevent you from burning your hands when you pick it up.
Keeps Tea Warm Evenly
Third, the Armudu glass helps your tea cool down just right. Unlike regular glasses, where hot drinks cool evenly, the Armudu cools the tea in the top part faster. But it keeps the tea at the bottom warm. This means your tea stays at a good temperature as you drink it.
