Arnold Donald studied at several universities. He earned a degree in economics from Carleton College in 1976. The next year, in 1977, he received a degree in mechanical engineering from Washington University in St. Louis. Later, in 1980, he completed his Master of Business Administration (MBA) at the University of Chicago.

Arnold Donald started his career at a company called Monsanto in St. Louis. He worked there for 23 years. During his time at Monsanto, he held many important jobs. He was the president of the company's nutrition and consumer parts. He also became a senior vice president for the whole company.
