Arnošt of Pardubice (born March 25, 1297 – died June 30, 1364) was a very important person in the history of Prague. He was the first ever Archbishop of Prague. Before that, he was the last bishop of the city. Arnošt was also a trusted advisor and diplomat for Emperor Charles IV.

Life of Arnošt of Pardubice

Arnošt of Pardubice was likely born in a place called Hostinka. Today, this area is part of Vestec. Some people also think he might have been born in Kłodzko. He was the oldest son of a knight named Arnošt of Hostinka. Arnošt spent his childhood years growing up in Kłodzko.

In 1340, Arnošt inherited the town of Pardubice. This made him a powerful landowner. He became the bishop of Prague on March 11, 1343. A bishop is a high-ranking leader in the Christian church. Just a year later, on May 8, 1344, he was given an even higher role. He became the very first Archbishop of Prague. An archbishop oversees many bishops and a larger church area.

Arnošt of Pardubice cared a lot about education. He helped the newly started Charles University in the 14th century. He asked monks to help support the university. This helped to make the education there even better.
