Kids Encyclopedia Facts
Arnulf II of Flanders
Arnulf II, also known as Arnulf the Young, was the Count of Flanders.

Arnulf II of Flanders (born around 961, died 987) was a French nobleman. He was also known as Arnulf the Young. He became the Count of Flanders in 965 and ruled until he died. The land he ruled, called the County of Flanders, was much smaller than his father's.

Arnulf's Early Life and Rule

Arnulf II was born around 961. His parents were Baldwin III, Count of Flanders, and Mathilde. Mathilde was the daughter of Herman, Duke of Saxony.

Arnulf's father, Baldwin III, died in 962. At that time, Arnulf was just a baby. His grandfather, Arnulf I, was still alive and ruling Flanders.

When Arnulf I died in 965, Arnulf II was too young to rule. A person named Baldwin Balso became his regent. A regent is someone who rules for a child until they are old enough. Balso, the regent, died in 973.

Changes to Flanders

By 976, Arnulf was old enough to rule on his own. However, Flanders had lost some land in the south. His grandfather, Arnulf I, had given some parts of Picardy to King Lothar of France. This was to help make sure Arnulf II would become the next count.

Arnulf I also gave Boulogne as a fief to his nephew, Arnulf II, Count of Boulogne. A fief was land given in exchange for loyalty and service.

While Arnulf II was still a child, King Lothar took Ponthieu. He gave this land to Hugh Capet. New counts also took control of Guînes. Arnulf II died on March 30, 987, when he was only 26 years old.

Soon after Arnulf's death, his wife married Robert II, who later became the King of France.

Family Life

In 968, Arnulf II married Rozala of Lombardy. She was the daughter of Berengar II of Italy. They had two children together:

  • Baldwin IV (980–1035), who became the next Count of Flanders after his father.
  • Mathilde, who died before 995.
