About His Life

Arthur Thomas Masterman was born on April 9, 1869. He grew up in Rotherfield Hall in Sussex, England. He went to school at University School in Hastings and then Weymouth College.

He was a very bright student and won a special scholarship. This allowed him to study at Christ's College, Cambridge University. There, he learned about how living things work (physiology) and the study of animals (zoology). He finished his studies in 1893.

His Work with Fish

After university, Masterman started working at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. By 1900, he was teaching about natural history. He became very interested in fish that people eat. He helped to understand the information gathered by a special research ship called "S. S. Garland."

He also helped create the Gatty Marine Laboratory. This was a place where scientists could study sea life. He worked with a senior scientist named William Carmichael McIntosh on this project. In 1900, he also taught about how living things develop from an early stage (embryology) at the University of Edinburgh.

In 1903, Masterman moved back to England. He took on an important role as the Superintendent Inspector of Fisheries. This meant he was in charge of overseeing fishing rules and research for the government's Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries.

Recognized for His Science

Masterman's important work was recognized by other scientists. In 1898, he was chosen to be a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. This is a group of top scientists in Scotland. He even won a special award from them called the Makdougall-Brisbane prize.

Later, in 1915, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society of London. This is one of the oldest and most respected scientific groups in the world. Being a Fellow means you are considered a leading expert in your field.
