Arthur Paul Harper (born June 27, 1865 – died May 30, 1955) was a very important person in New Zealand. He was a lawyer, a brave mountaineer, and an explorer. He also helped protect nature and was a successful businessman. People often called him simply AP or APH. He was born in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Arthur Paul Harper came from a well-known family. His father, Leonard Harper, was a Member of Parliament (MP) and a lawyer. An MP is someone elected to represent people in the government. His grandfather, Bishop Henry Harper, was a religious leader. Arthur went to Christ Church, Oxford University in England in 1884.

A Passion for Mountains

Arthur Paul Harper loved mountains and exploring. He was a key person in starting the New Zealand Alpine Club. This club was created in July 1891 in Christchurch. Arthur was the very first secretary and treasurer for the club. This shows how much he cared about mountaineering.

Recognized for His Work

Arthur Paul Harper received several important awards for his contributions to the community.

  • In 1935, he was given the King George V Silver Jubilee Medal. This medal celebrated 25 years of King George V's rule.
  • In 1950, he received the Loder Cup. This award is given to people who have done great things for New Zealand's native plants.
  • In the 1952 New Year Honours, he was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). This is a high honor given for excellent service to the community.
