Arthur Ryan (priest) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Arthur Ryan (1852–1922) was an Irish priest and a talented poet. He served as the president of St. Patrick's College, Thurles from 1887 to 1903, helping to guide many students.

Early Life and Education

Arthur Ryan was born in 1852 in Scarteen, County Limerick, Ireland. His family, the Ryans of Scarteen House and Emily House, were part of the Catholic gentry, which meant they were a well-known and respected family. He decided to become a priest and studied at Oscott College. In 1876, he was ordained as a priest in Thurles by Archbishop Thomas Croke, ready to serve the Cashel diocese.

Church Leadership and Service

After becoming a priest, Father Ryan was appointed to St. Patrick's College, Thurles, in 1876. He first worked as a Dean and a Professor, teaching students. In 1887, he became the president of the college, a very important leadership role. He was also made Vicar General of the diocese, which meant he helped the bishop manage the church's affairs. In 1903, he moved to become the parish priest at St. Michael's Church in Tipperary town. His vice-president, Father James J. Ryan, took over as president of the college.

Poet and Irish Nationalist

Father Ryan was also a gifted poet. He wrote for several publications, including the United Irishman, Irish Monthly, and Tipperary Leader, often using his initials A.R. He was a strong Irish nationalist, meaning he deeply believed in Ireland's right to govern itself. He supported John Redmond's idea that if Irish nationalists joined the British army in World War I, it would help Ireland achieve Home Rule (self-governance).

Redmond asked Canon Ryan to represent the Irish Party on the Provisional Committee of the Irish Volunteers. This group encouraged Irishmen to join the Irish Volunteers during the First World War. During Christmas 1916, Canon Ryan even went to the Western Front battlefields to minister to the soldiers of the 16th Irish Division, offering them spiritual support during the war.
