Arthur Scott Bailey (born November 16, 1877 – died October 17, 1949) was an American writer. He wrote over forty books for children. He is best known for his stories about animals, birds, and insects.

About Arthur Scott Bailey

Arthur Scott Bailey was born in St. Albans, Vermont, in the United States. His father owned a shop that sold dry goods and furs. Arthur went to St. Albans Academy and then to the University of Vermont. He later transferred to Harvard, where he finished his studies in 1902.

After college, Bailey worked as a grocery merchant in Chicago. In 1904, he moved to New York City and became an editor for different publishers. One of these was the Macaulay Company.

His Family Life

On September 14, 1913, Arthur married Estella W. Goodspeed in his hometown. Estella had two children from a previous marriage: Allen Wright Goodspeed (born 1906) and Estella Joanne Goodspeed (born 1908). Arthur treated Allen and Estella as his own children. Since he started writing after his marriage, it is thought that he began creating his stories for them.

His Writing Style

The Newark Evening News newspaper described Bailey's writing. They said he set all his stories in the world of animals, birds, and insects. He wove facts about nature into his tales. This made educators happy, but young readers didn't even notice they were learning!

Bailey made sure never to "write down" to children. This means he didn't make his language too simple. He often used words that might be new to young readers. He believed that kids would enjoy learning new words.

He also created a comic strip called Animal Whys, which was published in newspapers starting in 1937.

His Interests

Arthur Scott Bailey was known for being a smart person. He was a member of the Salamagundi Club in New York, which is a club for artists and writers. He was a Unitarian in his beliefs and a Republican in politics.

Arthur Scott Bailey passed away on October 17, 1949, when he was 71 years old.

His stepson, Allen W. Goodspeed, grew up to become a professor at West Virginia University. He taught about managing forests. There is even a scholarship named after him. Allen died on September 30, 1991.
