Arthur Upton (died 1662) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Arthur Upton (1614-1662) was an important person from Lupton in Devon, England. He was a Member of Parliament for Devon in 1654 and 1656. This was during a time when Oliver Cromwell was in charge of England, a period known as the Protectorate. Being a Member of Parliament meant Arthur Upton helped make laws for the country.

Early Life and Family

Arthur Upton was born in 1614. He was the oldest son of John Upton (1590-1641), who also lived in Lupton. His father was also a very active politician, serving as a Member of Parliament for Dartmouth four times between 1625 and 1641. Dartmouth is a town about 2.5 miles southwest of Lupton. Arthur's mother was Dorothy Rous (who passed away in 1644). She was the daughter of Sir Anthony Rous and the sister of Francis Rous (1579-1659), who was also a Member of Parliament. This shows that Arthur came from a family deeply involved in the politics of their time.

Marriage and Children

In 1638, Arthur Upton married Elizabeth Gould (who passed away in 1685). Elizabeth was the daughter of William Gould from Floyer Hayes near Exeter. She had previously been married to Robert Haydon. Arthur and Elizabeth had children together, including a son named:

  • John Upton (who passed away in 1687) of Lupton. Following in his father's and grandfather's footsteps, John also became a Member of Parliament for Dartmouth in 1679.
