Arthur William Rogers was an important geologist from Britain who also worked in South Africa. He was born on June 5, 1872, in Bishops Hull, England. He passed away on June 23, 1946, in Mowbray, Cape Town, South Africa. He became the Director of the Geological Survey of South Africa. This means he was in charge of studying the Earth's rocks and land in that country.

Arthur Rogers' Work as a Geologist

Arthur Rogers went to university at Cambridge in England. In 1895, he moved to South Africa. He started as an Assistant Geologist in 1896. He worked for the Cape of Good Hope Geological Commission.

He became a full Geologist in 1902. Later, from 1911 to 1916, he was an Assistant Director. In 1916, he became the Director of the Geological Survey of South Africa. He held this important job until he retired in 1932.

During his time as Director, a big meeting of geologists happened in South Africa. This was the International Congress of Geologists in 1929.

Mapping South Africa's Land

Early in his career, Arthur Rogers helped map distant areas. He explored parts of the Cape Province. This included areas near the Kalahari. Mapping means drawing detailed charts of the land.

He also mapped important gold fields. These were in places like Heidelberg and Klerksdorp. This work helped people understand where valuable minerals were.

Awards and Recognition

Arthur Rogers received many honors for his work. In 1931, he was given the Wollaston Medal. This is a very important award from the Geological Society of London.

In 1918, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a special title for top scientists. From 1935 to 1936, he was the President of the Royal Society of South Africa.
