Arthur Wynne Foot (born January 22, 1838 – died September 1, 1900) was an important Irish doctor and professor. He was also very interested in insects and was known as an entomologist.

Growing Up in Dublin

Arthur Wynne Foot was born in Dublin, Ireland, on January 22, 1838. His father, Lundy Edward Foot, was a lawyer and later worked for the Bank of Ireland. His mother was Lelias Callwell. Arthur had two brothers and four sisters. His family originally came from Cornwall.

Becoming a Doctor

Arthur went to Portarlington School. Later, he studied at Trinity College Dublin (TCD). He trained as an apprentice at Meath Hospital with Maurice Henry Colles.

He finished his studies at TCD. In 1862, he received his license from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RSCI). He earned his MD (Doctor of Medicine) degree in 1865. In 1871, he also got a special diploma in state medicine.

Teaching and Practicing Medicine

In 1864, Arthur Wynne Foot started teaching anatomy at the TCD medical school. He held this job until 1871. After that, he became a physician at Meath Hospital. He also managed the hospital's museum, which displayed items related to diseases.

In 1873, he began teaching medicine at the Ledwich School. He taught there until 1884. Then, he became the head of medicine at the RCSI. He stayed at the RCSI until 1893. He also worked as an examiner for the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. Later, he became the vice president of this college.

Studying Insects and Animals

Arthur Wynne Foot was not only a doctor but also loved studying animals. He was especially interested in entomology, which is the study of insects. He was an amateur zoologist, meaning he studied animals as a hobby, not as his main job.

In the 1860s and 1870s, he was an active member of the Dublin Natural History Society. This group focused on studying nature. He collected many insect specimens. Today, some of his insect collection is kept at the Natural History Museum, Dublin.

Later Life and Legacy

Arthur Wynne Foot passed away in Dublin on September 1, 1900. He had been unwell for some time, which led to his early retirement. A special article about his life was published in the British Medical Journal.
