Artpace (also called Artpace San Antonio) is a special place in downtown San Antonio, Texas. It is a non-profit organization, which means it doesn't try to make money. Instead, it focuses on modern art and is free for everyone to visit.

A kind artist, collector, and helper named Linda Pace started Artpace in 1995. Her goal was to help both new and famous artists grow their creative ideas. Artpace also loves to bring artists and the community together through different programs.

The building where Artpace is located used to be a car dealership back in the 1920s. Now, it's a huge 18,000-square-foot space. It has five different areas to show art, including the Hudson Showroom and the Main Space gallery. There are also three apartments for artists and curators to stay in. Plus, it has a library, a workshop, and other areas for events like talks and gatherings.

Artists Come to Stay and Create

Artpace is very well known for its International Artist-in-Residence (IAIR) program. An "artist-in-residence" means an artist comes to live and work at Artpace for a certain time.

A special guest "curator" chooses the artists for this program. A curator is someone who helps pick artists and organize art shows. Each year, nine artists are chosen to come to Artpace in three groups. Each group stays for four months. The curator picks one artist from Texas, one from the rest of the United States, and one from anywhere else in the world.

While they are at Artpace, artists get a lot of support. They have a furnished apartment to live in and can use a studio and exhibition space any time they want. They also get money for living expenses, a grant to buy art supplies, and their travel costs are covered. This program helps artists create new art without worrying about money or resources.

Each residency starts with a friendly dinner where the artists meet people from the local community. At the end of their stay, the artists and curators talk about the art they created. This helps visitors understand the artworks better.

Since 1995, more than 250 artists from all over the world have been part of the IAIR Program. Over 80 curators have helped choose these artists. Many artists who have been part of this program have gone on to win important art awards and shown their work in famous art shows around the world.

Art for Everyone: Educational Programs

Artpace has many educational programs for people of all ages. They have programs for kids from kindergarten to high school, as well as for families, adults, and even university students.

One popular event is called Chalk It Up. This event celebrates public art that everyone can help create. Every year, a street in downtown San Antonio is filled with amazing, temporary chalk murals. Artists of all ages and skill levels draw on the street. This event is a fun way for the community to learn about art and interact with modern artists.
