Artur Fernandes Agostinho (born December 25, 1920 – died March 22, 2011) was a famous Portuguese journalist, radio host, actor, and writer. He also worked as a publicist, helping to promote different things. He received a special award called the Military Order of Saint James of the Sword for his many achievements.

A Life in Media

Artur Agostinho grew up in Lisbon, Portugal. He went to Liceu Camões, a high school, and enjoyed acting in amateur plays at a club called Campolide Atlético Clube. He even started studying electrical engineering at a big university, Instituto Superior Técnico. However, one of his teachers told him that engineering wasn't quite right for him, so he decided to try something else.

Starting in Radio

Around 1938, Artur began working at small amateur radio stations, like Rádio Luso. He then moved on to bigger stations, including Rádio Peninsular and Clube Radiofónico de Portugal. Eventually, Rádio Clube Português invited him to join their team, and that's where he first started getting paid for his radio work. In 1944, he became a full-time professional, and the next year, he joined Emissora Nacional.

From Sports to Acting

Starting in 1947, Artur Agostinho became very well-known as a live football commentator and reporter on the radio. He worked for Emissora Nacional and later for Rádio Renascença, bringing exciting sports moments to listeners.

He was also a talented actor, appearing in many films. Some of his movies include Cais do Sodré (1946), O Leão da Estrela (1947), and Capas Negras (1947). He continued acting in films throughout his life, with later roles in O Testamento do Senhor Napumoceno (1997) and Tudo Isto é Fado (2004).

On television, Artur Agostinho hosted the first Portuguese TV competition called Quem Sabe, Sabe (Who Knows, Knows). He also took part in other popular shows like O Senhor que se Segue and No Tempo Em Que Você Nasceu. Later, he appeared in many TV series and soap operas, such as Casa da Saudade, Inspector Max, and Pai à Força.

Overcoming Challenges

After a big change in Portugal's government in 1974, Artur Agostinho faced some difficulties. However, he worked hard to overcome these challenges. In the years that followed, he became famous again in radio, television, and cinema.

A Sporting Honor

Artur Agostinho was a lifelong fan and member of Sporting Clube de Portugal, a famous sports club. In April 2011, as a special tribute to him, the auditorium at the Estádio José Alvalade stadium was officially named after him.

Personal Life

Artur Agostinho had a daughter named Emília Agostinho. She worked as a translator before she retired. Emília has a son named João from her second marriage, and she is also a grandmother to Leonor.
