Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Asseek River is a river located in the beautiful Central Coast region of British Columbia, Canada. It flows north from the Pacific Ranges mountains and eventually reaches the ocean at the top of a place called South Bentinck Arm.

About the Asseek River

The name "Asseek River" has been used since 1930. But before that, an older map from 1913 showed it with a different name: the Talolail River.

Where the Asseek River Flows

The Asseek River starts in the rugged Pacific Ranges. It then travels north until it empties into the saltwater of South Bentinck Arm. This area is known for its stunning natural beauty.

Nearby Waterways and Features

A few miles north of the Asseek River's mouth, on the east side of South Bentinck Arm, you'll find the Taleomey River. The area where the Taleomey River meets the sea forms a narrow part of the inlet called Taleomey Narrows. This is also where Taleomy Indian Reserve No. 3 is located, which belongs to the Nuxalk Nation.

Just north of where the Asseek River enters the water, there's another narrow section of the inlet called Bentinck Narrows. This narrow spot is created by a fan-shaped build-up of dirt and rocks from a stream called Ickna Creek.

Connection to the Nuxalk Nation

The area around the mouth of the Asseek River was once home to two Nuxalk villages. These villages were named Aseik and Koapk. The Nuxalk Nation has a long history and deep connection to this land and its waterways.
