The Astoria Sanitarium was a special kind of hospital in Queens, New York. It was a private hospital, meaning it was owned by a person, not the government. Dr. John F. Daly was the owner, and it was sometimes called Daly's Astoria Sanitarium.

A Look Back: The Hospital's Story

The story of this hospital began with an earlier medical center in Queens, New York. This first hospital, called Astoria Hospital, closed its doors in 1898.

Trying to Reopen

Years later, in 1910, some doctors who used to work at the old Astoria Hospital tried to open it again. However, their efforts were not successful.

Then, in 1925, a new attempt was made. This time, it worked! The hospital reopened under the name Daly's Astoria Sanitarium. It was a private place that helped people who were sick and also served as a maternity hospital for new mothers.

Becoming Astoria General Hospital

In 1949, a group of doctors bought the hospital. They decided to change its name to Astoria General Hospital. This happened many years after Dr. Daly had finished medical school.

Later, in 1993, Astoria General Hospital joined forces with a larger hospital system called Mount Sinai. With help from fundraising, the hospital grew bigger and moved to a new location.

At its new home, the hospital changed its name again to Western Queens Community Hospital. After that, it became known as Mount Sinai Queens, which is still a well-known hospital today.
