Early Life and Education

Astrid Fischel Volio studied at two different universities. She attended the University of Costa Rica in her home country. She also studied at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom.

Becoming a Professor

After her studies, she became a professor. From 1984 to 1998, she taught at the History and Geography School of the University of Costa Rica. A professor is a teacher at a university. She helped students learn about history and geography.

Working in Government

Later, Astrid Fischel Volio entered politics. From 1998 to 2002, she served as the First Vice President of Costa Rica. The Vice President is a high-ranking official who helps the President lead the country. During this time, she was also the Minister of Culture. A Minister of Culture is in charge of promoting arts, history, and traditions in the country.

In 2002, she was appointed as the Minister of Education. This role meant she was responsible for the country's schools and learning programs. However, she resigned from this position on June 3, 2003. This happened during a teachers' strike because the Ministry of Education was having trouble paying the teachers.
