Astro Pops

Astro Pops are unique, cone-shaped lollipops with three different colors and flavors. They are made by Leaf Brands and are known for their fun, rocket-like design.

The Story Behind Astro Pops

Astro Pops were first created in 1963. Two rocket scientists, who worked on the space program in El Segundo, California, decided to try something new. They left their jobs to invent the Astro Pop. They designed the lollipop to look like a three-stage rocket.

These scientists even built their own machines. This helped them make the cone wrappers faster. Astro Pops are special because the wrapper itself becomes the mold for the candy. Hot, melted candy is poured right into the wrapper. Then, a paper stick is added. Finally, a layer of wax seals the top.

Astro Pops became very popular in the 1960s. This was during the "Space Race," when countries were competing to explore space. Millions of Astro Pops were sold because they fit perfectly with this exciting time.

Changes Over Time

In 1987, the Spangler Candy Company bought the Astro Pops brand. Spangler also makes other famous candies like Dum Dums and Circus Peanuts. The first Astro Pops had three main flavors: cherry, passionfruit, and pineapple. Spangler later added new flavors, such as banana split and caramel apple.

Around the year 2000, Spangler changed the shape of the Astro Pop. They moved the stick to the tip of the pop. They thought this would make it easier to lick. However, in September 2004, Spangler stopped making Astro Pops.

A Sweet Comeback

In 2010, a person named Ellia Kassoff bought the Astro Pops brand. It is now part of Leaf Brands, LLC. Leaf Brands has brought back Astro Pops and even added new products. These include Astro Pop Asteroids, which are smaller, bite-sized pieces. They also made Astro Pops Sodas.

Ellia Kassoff is known for bringing back old candy brands. He paid Spangler for the recipes and the rights to the Astro Pops name. The original machines used to make the candy had been sold. So, Leaf Brands had to figure out a new way to make them. Kassoff has helped revive other classic brands too. His company, Strategic Marks, focuses on bringing beloved products back to life.
