What Was the ABC?
The Atanasoff-Berry Computer was a groundbreaking machine. It was designed by Professor John Vincent Atanasoff and his student Clifford Berry. They worked at Iowa State University. The ABC was not like modern computers. You could not easily change its programs. Instead, it was built for one specific job: solving groups of math problems called linear equations.
Why Was the ABC Important?
Even though it was built for one task, the ABC was very advanced for its time. It was successfully tested in 1942. This computer was the first to use many ideas that are now common in all computers. For example, it used binary numbers (0s and 1s) for calculations. It also used electronic parts called vacuum tubes. These tubes helped the computer work much faster than older mechanical machines. The ABC showed the world what was possible with electronic computing. It truly was a pioneer machine.
