Early Life and Education
George Sokomanu was born in 1937 in a place called Mele. He went to school at Iririki District School in Port Vila. Later, in the 1940s, he studied at the Lelean Memorial School in Fiji.
He spoke English and started working for the British National Service in the New Hebrides in 1957. For nearly 20 years, he worked in the District Administration office. In 1965, he earned a diploma in Public and Social Administration. This helped him get promoted to assistant administrative officer.
In 1969, he was chosen to be a member of the New Hebrides Advisory Council. He continued his studies in 1974 at the University of the South Pacific. From 1978 to 1979, he was a minister in the government. In 1979, he was elected to the Parliament of Vanuatu. He served as the Minister of Home Affairs and also as the deputy chief minister under Walter Lini.
Becoming President of Vanuatu
When Vanuatu became an independent country in 1980, George Sokomanu was chosen by the Parliament to be its first President. The president's role in Vanuatu is mostly ceremonial, meaning it involves important duties but not direct control over the government. During his time as president, he was a member of the Vanua'aku Pati.
In February 1984, he stepped down from his role. However, just a few weeks later, the Parliament re-elected him. He then began a new five-year term as president. In December 1988, he tried to remove the Prime Minister, Walter Lini. He wanted to set up a new government led by his nephew, Barak Sopé. But the Supreme Court of Vanuatu quickly reversed his decision the very next day. In 1989, the Electoral College decided to remove Sokomanu from office.
Later Contributions
After his presidency, George Sokomanu continued to serve his region. From 1993 to 1996, he was the Secretary-General of the Pacific Community. This organization works to help countries in the Pacific Ocean.
In February 2022, he was a special person who carried the baton for the 2022 Commonwealth Games Queen's Baton Relay. This event celebrates sports and friendship among Commonwealth nations.
He has received special honors for his service. These include the Vanuatu Order of Merit and the MBE.
