Attilio Bertolucci was an important Italian poet and writer. He was born on November 18, 1911, and passed away on June 14, 2000. You might know his sons, Bernardo and Giuseppe Bertolucci, who became famous film directors.

About Attilio Bertolucci

Attilio Bertolucci was born in San Lazzaro, a town in the Parma region of Italy. His family worked in agriculture.

He started writing poems when he was very young. In 1928, he worked with a newspaper called Gazzetta di Parma. His friend, Cesare Zavattini, was the main editor there. The next year, Bertolucci published his first book of poems, titled Sirio.

In 1931, he began studying law at the University of Parma. However, he soon left law to focus on art and literature. In 1932, his work Fuochi di Novembre earned him praise from other Italian poets, like Eugenio Montale.

In 1951, he moved to Rome. He was married to Ninetta Giovanardi, and they had two sons. These were Bernardo (born 1941, died 2018) and Giuseppe (born 1947, died 2012). Both of his sons later became well-known film directors. Also in 1951, Attilio Bertolucci published La capanna indiana. This book helped him win the important Viareggio Prize for literature. During this time, he also became good friends with Pier Paolo Pasolini.

Viaggio d'inverno ("Winter Voyage"), published in 1971, is one of Bertolucci's best works. This book showed a new style in his poetry. His earlier poems used simple language for everyday situations. But Viaggio d'inverno was more complex and explored uncertain feelings. From 1975, he helped manage a literary magazine called Nuovi Argomenti. He worked on this with Enzo Siciliano and Alberto Moravia. He won another Viareggio Prize for his long poem Camera da letto (published between 1984 and 1988).

His last published work was La lucertola di Casarola (1997). This book was a collection of poems he wrote when he was younger, along with some new, unpublished poems.

Attilio Bertolucci passed away in Rome in the year 2000. Some of his poems have been translated into English by Charles Tomlinson and Allen Prowle.
