Atul Chitnis (born February 20, 1962 – died June 3, 2013) was a talented technologist from India and Germany. He was well-known for helping to organize FOSS.IN, which was one of Asia's biggest events for free and open source software (FOSS). FOSS is like software that anyone can use, change, and share freely.

Atul Chitnis's Career in Tech
Atul Chitnis loved technology and sharing knowledge. In 1989, he created something called CiX. This was a Bulletin Board System (BBS). A BBS was an early way for people to connect online. It let many users join online communities.
Writing and Public Speaking
Atul also wrote for a magazine called PCQuest. His column was named COMversations. He often gave talks about how data communication worked. He also spoke about the Internet and intranets in Indian businesses. As a Consulting Editor for PCQuest, he helped with the PCQuest Linux Initiative. This project encouraged people to use Linux, a type of FOSS.
Supporting Free and Open Source Software
Atul was a big supporter of FOSS. He volunteered with groups like the Bangalore Linux User Group. He also held seminars and wrote articles. Through these efforts, he encouraged many people to use FOSS technologies.
He was one of the main organizers of the Linux Bangalore conferences. These events were driven by the FOSS community. Later, these conferences became known as FOSS.IN. It grew to be one of Asia's largest yearly FOSS events. Atul also helped teach at the National Resource Centre For Free/Open Source Software. He often spoke at different places about FOSS technology and how to use it.
Later Life
Atul Chitnis passed away on June 3, 2013. He had been diagnosed with intestinal cancer in August 2012.
