The August Bepler House is a historic home in Cincinnati, Ohio, United States. It was built in 1869 for August Bepler, a rich inventor. Today, it is known as an important historic site.

Who Was August Bepler?

August Bepler became wealthy by inventing a special machine. This machine made a new kind of product: the flat-bottomed paper bag. Before this, paper bags often fell over. Bepler's invention made them much more useful!

He was born in another country and moved to the United States in 1851. Just four years later, he started a company to make paper bags. His first factory was in a village near Cincinnati called Lockland. Later, in 1858, he moved his company right into Cincinnati.

With the money he earned from his successful company, Bepler had this house built in 1869. He even paid for a second house that looked very similar. That second house was in St. Louis, Missouri, but it is no longer standing today.

What Does the House Look Like?

The August Bepler House has two stories. Its outside walls are covered with a material called weatherboard. The house sits on a strong stone foundation. It also has a tin roof and some parts made of brick.

On the left side of the house, there is a large bay window. This window sticks out from the wall. The front of the house has a big porch with tall columns. These columns have fancy tops, like those seen in ancient Greek buildings. This style is called Neoclassical. It gives the house a grand and classic look. This style was not very common in the Cincinnati area.

Why Is It a Historic Place?

In 1977, the August Bepler House was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a special list of important buildings in the United States. The house earned its spot for two main reasons.

First, its architecture is very special. It shows a unique Neoclassical style for the area. Second, it was the home of August Bepler. He was a very important person in Cincinnati because of his inventions and business success.
