Augusta Marryat (born September 23, 1828 – died May 10, 1899) was a British writer and artist who created exciting stories for children. She is perhaps best known for her adventure novel Left to Themselves: A Boy's Adventure in Australia, published in 1878. This book was later called The Young Lamberts. Even though her story was set in Australia, Augusta Marryat never actually visited the country herself.

Her Life and Family

Augusta Marryat was born in Fulham, a town in Surrey, England. Her father was Frederick Marryat, a very successful and popular writer. Her mother was Catherine Shairp.

Augusta came from a family of writers! Two of her sisters, Florence and Emilia, also became authors. Augusta followed in her father's footsteps, writing adventure stories that often taught good lessons about right and wrong.

She passed away in Surrey in 1899.
