The King's Trial

Garland was part of a special committee. This group was set up to decide how to handle the trial of King Charles I of England. In 1649, he was one of the people who signed a document that led to the king's execution. People who were involved in this event are called Regicides.

Years later, in 1660, the monarchy was brought back to England. This period is known as the Restoration. King Charles II, the son of the executed king, returned to the throne. Many people who had been involved in his father's death faced serious consequences.

Augustine Garland was one of these people. He was sentenced to death. However, his sentence was changed. Instead of being executed, his property was taken away. He was also sent to prison. Records show he might have been sent to Tangier in 1664. Tangier was a city that became a British possession at that time. But it is not clear if he actually went there.
