Augusto Fantozzi (born June 24, 1940 – died July 13, 2019) was an important Italian person. He was a lawyer, a tax expert, a university professor, and a businessman. He also worked in the government as a minister. He was the Minister of Economy and Finance, and later the Minister of Foreign Trade.

Growing Up and Learning
Augusto Fantozzi was born in Rome, Italy, on July 24, 1940. He went to La Sapienza University. In 1962, he earned a degree in law there.
His Work and Public Service
Starting His Career
Fantozzi started his career as a professor. From 1974 to 1990, he taught tax law at La Sapienza University. In 1975, he also started his own law firm called Fantozzi & Associati. He gave tax advice to big companies like the Benetton Group. Later, in 1990, he became a professor at LUISS University in Rome.
Working in Government
Fantozzi became a government minister. From January 1995 to May 1996, he was the Minister of Finance. He worked in the government led by Prime Minister Lamberto Dini.
In 1996, he became a deputy, which is like a member of parliament. He represented a group called the Olive Tree Alliance. In May 1996, Fantozzi was chosen to be the Minister of Foreign Trade. He served in this role until October 1998, working in the government led by Romano Prodi.
After Government Roles
After leaving his minister roles, Fantozzi continued to be active. He became the chairman of a committee that looked after budgets and economic plans. In May 2005, he joined the board of directors for Enel, a large energy company.
In June 2005, he also became the chairman of Banca Antonveneta, a bank. He left this position in late 2006. Fantozzi was also on the board of directors for the Benetton Group. He was also part of the Consulta, which advises the Vatican on how to run its state efficiently.
In August 2008, the Italian government chose Fantozzi for a special job. He became the "extraordinary administrator" for Alitalia, an airline. This meant he helped manage the company through a difficult financial time.
