Where is Augustus Island?
Augustus Island is in the northern part of Western Australia. It is off the coast of the Kimberley region. This region is famous for its rugged landscapes. The island is part of a group of islands called the Bonaparte Archipelago.
Who Owns the Land?
Most islands in the Kimberley region are "crown land." This means they are owned by the government. However, Augustus Island is different. It is included in a special area called Reserve 23079. This reserve is set aside for the "Use and Benefit of Aborigines." This means the land is managed for the benefit of Australia's first peoples.
Amazing Wildlife on Augustus Island
Augustus Island is a safe home for many animals and plants. When sea levels rose long ago, these living things became separated from the mainland. This means their populations on the island are still very natural. There are no known feral animals on the island. Feral animals are wild animals that used to be pets or farm animals.
The Nabarlek: A Tiny Wallaby
The island is a perfect habitat for the Nabarlek. This animal is also called the Little Rock-Wallaby. It is a small type of wallaby. The island has weathered sandstone rocks. These rocks have deep cracks and holes. These cracks provide great hiding spots for the Nabarlek.
Golden Bandicoots: A Special Find
The golden bandicoot also lives on Augustus Island. This animal is a "vulnerable species." This means it is at risk of disappearing. The last time a golden bandicoot was seen on the island was in 2003. These bandicoots like areas with Warton sandstone. They also like the heathland on the rocky areas.
