The Austrorossia australis, also known as the big bottom bobtail squid, is a type of bobtail squid. It belongs to the Sepiolidae family. This small squid lives in sandy and muddy areas deep underwater. You can find it between 131 and 665 meters deep. It lives in the waters near South Australia, New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, and Queensland.

What Does It Look Like?
This bobtail squid has a special look. Its body can be pinkish or a purple-brown color. The top part of its body, called the dorsal mantle, is not attached to its head. It also has wide, short fins that help it move.
How Big Is It?
The big bottom bobtail squid is quite small. Male squids are about 3.4 centimeters long. Female squids are a bit larger, reaching up to 6.3 centimeters in length.
How Does It Reproduce?
Female Austrorossia australis lay their eggs in small groups. They do not stay to guard the eggs after laying them. These females can lay eggs multiple times throughout the year.
Conservation Status
The big bottom bobtail squid is not in danger. Its main threat is being caught by fishing boats. However, there is only a small interest in fishing for them. Because of this, it does not need special protection. The IUCN Red List has listed it as a "Least Concern" species. This means it is not currently at risk of disappearing.
